The Volturno is a nice river running in the centre of Italy located in the Molise region. It’s easily reachable from Rome , Naple and also from the Abruzzo National Park.
The stretch manage as C&R is located in the Municipality called Colli al Volturno and it has 2 separeted stretches: one is located in the Ponte Rosso area and the other one is located close to the Restaurant Volturno where it’s possible to buy the daily licenses.
The downstream stretch (Ponte Rosso) is a short but wonderful stretch of no more than 300 m. Here you can be amazed by the beauty of this river with its amazing clear water and nice native browns.
The upstream stretch running in the municipality of Colli al Volturno is a little bit longer than the Ponte Rosso stretch (almost 1 km) and it’s very well popolated by native brownies and also stocked raimbows.
This river is very well known for its amazing hatches of Ephemera Danica (May and June) of of the myth of the fly fishermen but also it’s one of the few places in Italy where hatches the Oligoneuriella rhenana. If you want be amazed by the Oligoneuriella hatches fish this river in August and wait for the late evening.
The trouts are very selective in both the stretches, despite in the Ponte Rosso area fishing is a bit more difficult than in the upstream stretch a good surprise can be always around the corner. If you are a dry fly fisherman a good selection of tiny flies (emergers and spinner on #18/20) is absolutly required., despite when the evening fall down also the caddis can give good results. During the August month when the Oligoneuriella hatches you have no other chances to catch fish…you have to use imitiations of the wonderful white lady.
Best period for fishing this river is May and June and then September.
